"You don't have to know very much if you know your way to the public library" - Leslie Conger

    Youth Room

Our Youth Room is divided into 2 areas. The first as you enter is the Chapter-book area, where we shelve the Juvenile and Young Adult novels and non-fiction titles. In the corner of this area are the new titles, Audios and Videos, games, jigsaw puzzles, and State books. We often feature a special collection of "Happening Books for Young Adults" lent to us for three months by the VT Department of Libraries. There are also other Juvenile novels and non-fiction titles borrowed from the State's Regional Libraries.

Currently we are concentrating on building up our Juvenile Audio collection. Many of our current video and audio titles have come to us through donations from patrons. If you have any good sound or video recordings that you're not using anymore, we'd love to consider them for our collection.

At the end of the Juvenile Non-fiction titles are shelved our back issues of National Geographic magazines. We have complete sets of the past 20 years for borrowing or research. Also shelved in this section is our collection of titles aimed at helping parents, teachers, or caregivers encourage children to become lifelong readers. There are books with suggested reading lists, activities related to books, fingerplays, and tips for reading aloud.

Our Juvenile magazines and Parenting pamphlets and brochures are also housed here, as well as a separate bulletin board for Youth issues and events.

Past the magazine rack is our display of "Dorothy Canfield Fisher" titles for the current year's award list. Each year's list features 30 titles for children in grades 4-8 from which a winner is chosen by the popular vote of children in Vermont.

On the top of the Juvenile Fiction bookcase is the current collection of "Green Mountain Book Award" titles. This reader's choice award for students in grades 9-12 is similar to the DCF award mentioned above and features 15 titles of interest to young adults who also choose each year's winner by a popular vote.

Youth Room - FrontThere is a small table and chairs available for studying, reading, playing a game, or working on a puzzle. Folders containing paper word games/puzzles are available in the magazine rack for anyone looking for "something to do".

Behind the Chapter-book area is the Picturebook or younger reader's area. Here are shelved the Picturebook Fiction and Non-Fiction, board books, and Easy (Beginning) Readers.
There is a comfortable low rocking chair and a soft colorful rug, as well as a table and small chairs for reading or activities.

Our weekly Preschool Storybook Times are held in this area, on Tuesday mornings at 10:00 a.m. for 3 - 5 year-olds, throughout the school year. These programs feature stories, songs, finger-plays, and fun!

In the summer we feature programs based on a summer reading theme chosen and supported by the Department of Libraries. There are special bins in this section for State books, and special displays which include holiday/seasonal offerings as well as titles from the annual "Red Clover" award list, the picture book version of the DCF list mentioned earlier for students in Kindergarten through 4th grade. There is also a pyramid display rack for new titles, and a TV and VCR for programs and for quiet viewing of videos in the library.
