Your Library Card
It's easy to get a library card. All persons, regardless of their place of residence, may obtain a library card at the Fairlee Public Library, during regular business hours. There is no charge for a library card. We need your name, your mailing address and your phone number in order to issue your card. You, or your household, will be assigned a number, and then you may borrow books and other items for a 2-week circulation period. There is no limit on the number of items you may borrow.
If you need more time with a book or other item,
, as long as no other patron has placed a reserve on the item. The exceptions to this policy are Inter-Library Loan items, for which renewals must be approved by the librarian. Materials may be brought in for renewal, or you may phone in. Please have the due date, author and title ready to give the librarian when you call.

This library does not charge fines for overdue materials; however timely returns are considerate and much appreciated by our other patrons. If you would like to, you may make a contribution to our "conscience box"; these funds are used to fund library programs. Patrons may be billed for lost or seriously damaged items. |

Whether or not you get a library card, you may use the library's collections while in the library and attend library programs.
Your library card also entitles you to register for and use the library's Public Access computers. Below are the Brief Guidelines for Use of the Public Access Computer, see Statement of Policies for detailed procedures and rules of use.
- All users, reserved or walk-in, must sign in at the circulation desk. First-time users must read and understand the Policy and Guidelines for Use of the Public Access Computer and must sign the computer user registration form. Users under 18 years old must have the form co-signed by a parent or guardian in the presence of library staff.
- Users who have little or no computer and/or Internet searching experience may make special arrangements to receive training. The library staff is available to answer basic questions but cannot spend more than 15 minutes per patron to instruct or assist. There are books on computer and Internet use that may be borrowed or you may reserve time with one of our volunteer computer mentors.
- ALL PATRONS DESERVE TO HAVE THEIR PRIVATE TIME ON THE COMPUTER, so, please, unless you're asked, don't look over anyone's shoulder while they work. But, also, the user should be aware that the computer screen is visible to others in the room.
- You may reserve blocks of time to use the computer on a schedule which is kept at the circulation desk. These reservations may be for blocks of 30 or 60 minutes, up to one hour per week, during regular library hours. Reservations may be made up to one week in advance and may be made by phone, during library hours. Any reservation requests left on the library's answering machine must be confirmed during library hours. Reservations are not required, but are definitely recommended.
- If the computer is not being used, and is not reserved, you may use the terminal until the next reserved time or for up to 30 minutes. If you wish to continue longer and there is no one else waiting or reserved, an additional 30 minutes will be allowed but you must relinquish the computer if another patron wishes to use the computer during this second 30 minute time slot.
- Cancellations of reservations should be called in to the library as soon as possible.
- If a scheduled user is more than 10 minutes late without prior notification, the reservation will be canceled.
- Users are responsible for any damage to hardware or software and will be liable for repair or replacement costs.
- Parents are responsible for determining their children's use of library resources.
- You may print pages at a cost of 10 cents per page. (Hint : Select Print Preview before you print to determine the number of pages of a document so that you won't incur unexpected costs.) Students may receive up to 10 pages free for school / study use.
- No downloading to the library's hard disk is allowed. New diskettes are available for 50 cents at the circulation desk, or you may borrow a free recycled diskette, subject to supply on hand.
- Patrons who need to bring their own diskettes to work on ongoing projects must present the diskette to library staff to be scanned for viruses before the diskette may be inserted in the computer. (This applies to CD-ROMs also.)
- You may not work in DOS nor exit from Windows, nor interfere with the setup or configuration of the computer's hardware or software. (This includes the "Bookmarks" or "Favorites" selections on the Internet navigators.)
- "Bookmarks" suggestions may be left with library staff for inclusion in our "Recommended Sites" rolodex.
- At end of Internet Session: close the Navigator and disconnect the phone connection but do not exit Windows, nor shut off the computer.
